HISTORY
Over 110 years ago, Good Samaritan Family Resource Center was founded by the Episcopal Diocese, in San Francisco, to assist newly arrived immigrants in pursuing their dreams. As the second oldest settlement house in the country, Good Samaritan has been serving the needs of low-income families in San Francisco’s Mission district since 1894. Although the population continues to change, bringing a rich mixture of many ethnic groups, cultures and languages to the neighborhood, it is currently predominantly Latino. Our mission is to help immigrant families access needed services, develop self-sufficiency and participate fully as members of the community.
Good Samaritan serves over 1,000 children and families throughout the year. Our clients are low-income immigrant families living in and around the Mission District. Most of our families are recent immigrants from rural areas of Mexico and Central America. Within these families, the majority of adults have minimal formal education and 89% of households are Spanish speaking. Good Samaritan currently provides an array of comprehensive family support services that provide direct support, education, information, and referrals.
